HAWKERS - 2020

Mobile service workers and comodity sellers have become a common site within the Lagos city landscape. Primarily selling on busy roads, bridges and residential urban areas, they can be seen working around the clock, offering a variety of goods and services that cater for the millions of people that flow through the city each day.

This thriving trade contributes to an informal economy that has advantages and disadvantages for the city it serves. Although providing vital employment for many, the goods are often unregulated and do not comply with trading standards, which has led to a ban in many parts of Lagos.

The 22 large-scale portraits were photographed on the streets of Lagos using a plain white background to separate the sellers from their busy environments, creating a pristine space for the viewer to examine all of the details within the frame.
