HAWKERS - 2020
Hawkers and mobile service workers have become a common site within the Lagos city landscape. Primarily selling on busy roads, bridges and residential urban areas, they can be seen working around the clock, offering a variety of goods and services that cater for the millions of people that flow through the city each day.
This thriving trade contributes to an informal economy that has advantages and disadvantages for the city it serves. Although providing vital employment for many, the goods are often unregulated and do not comply with trading standards, which has led to a ban in many parts of Lagos.
Photographed against a plain background the large-scale portraits play with the notion of the portrait as a product, creating a pristine space for the viewer to examine the details of each individual seller and the goods/services they provide.
Hawker - A person who travels about selling goods informally, typically advertising them by shouting, or making noise.
